At its core are two South Africans: Luvuyo Sume, a production engineer and amputee, and Riaan Knight, a certified clinical prosthetist and orthotist. Their synergy ensures PET’s products are developed with both technical excellence and patient-centred functionality.

Luvuyo brings a personal understanding to the company’s vision. As an amputee himself, he experienced the daily struggles all amputees face. With his engineering background, he decided to create something better, starting with an affordable, locally made silicone liner that improves hygiene, durability, and comfort.

Riaan brings extensive clinical experience, he knows what patients need in the real world and helps ensure that PET’s products aren’t just innovative, they truly improve people’s lives.

Together, they form a powerful team: one grounded in lived experience and the other in clinical expertise. Their collaboration allows PET to design and produce prosthetics that are not only technically advanced but also practical, durable, and accessible, especially for those in underserved communities.

PET is South Africa’s first large-scale manufacturing facility for prosthetic components, reducing reliance on costly imports and helping more amputees regain mobility and independence.

As the company moves toward regulatory approvals and international markets, Luvuyo and Riaan remain focused on their mission: to make high-quality prosthetics available to everyone who needs them, not just those who can afford them.
