In South Africa and other regions across the Global South, limited access to silicone prosthetic liners stems from high production costs and reliance on imports from Europe and North America. Factors such as expensive labour, stringent medical certifications, and fluctuating exchange rates have further driven up costs, making this essential technology inaccessible to many who need it most.

At Prosthetic Engineering Technologies, our team is united by a shared commitment to transforming the lives of amputees. Led by Luvuyo Sume, an Industrial Engineer and amputee with a passion for accessibility, and Riaan Knight, a highly respected Medical Prosthetist, our team combines technical expertise, compassion, and dedication to create affordable, high-quality silicone prosthetic liners. Together, we bring innovative, patient-focused solutions that prioritize comfort, durability, and stability, working tirelessly to make a positive impact on the lives of amputees across South Africa and beyond.

Luvuyo Sume
Luvuyo Sume, an Industrial Engineer and amputee, founded Prosthetic Engineering Technologies with a deep, personal understanding of the challenges faced by amputees. His experience fuels his drive to make high-quality silicone prosthetic liners affordable and accessible to those who need them most. With a background in engineering and innovation, Luvuyo combines technical expertise with a heartfelt commitment to transforming lives, advocating for accessible solutions for amputees throughout South Africa and beyond.

Riaan Knight
Riaan Knight, a respected SA Medical Prosthetist, brings invaluable expertise and dedication to Prosthetic Engineering Technologies. With extensive experience in prosthetics, Riaan is instrumental in ensuring that the silicone liners meet both the medical and practical needs of amputees. His commitment to quality and precision has played a critical role in designing a liner that aligns with international standards, delivering a product that provides exceptional comfort, durability, and stability for amputees.

Our mission to develop a locally manufactured, high-quality silicone prosthetic liner would not have been possible without the support of our partners and collaborators. Organisations like Propella Business Incubator, SAB Foundation, TIA, MeDDIC, CSIR, IDC and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) provided the resources, expertise, and equipment needed to bring this vision to life.
